This weekly class is an introduction to strategies that improve stress management, build capacity for dealing with future stressful situations, and mindfulness to improve overall well-being. Through in-class and homework assignments, students will increase their awareness of stress symptoms and will engage in activities designed to support a more responsive approach to stress coping. Emphasis will be placed on body scan techniques, sitting meditations, and mindful movement- such as mindful walking and stretching. Students will also learn various strategies designed to enhance wellness through mindfulness in their everyday lives.

This class is intended for students looking to practice yoga and breath work with an emphasis on group practices, learning about different styles of asana(the physical postures of yoga), and learning about the eight limbs of yoga and the physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual benefits of developing a yoga practice. Students will learn about yoga through community practice in class, and will be encouraged to read The Yamas & Niyamas: Exploring Yoga's Etihical Practice by Deborah Adele. This class is designed to be progressive, so that from the beginning of the five weeks until the end, students will experience for themselves the benefits of a regular yoga practice.
Note(s): Each class meeting will a warmup, yoga asana practice, cool down, and time for reflection at the end of class. Formal yoga practices will include vinyasa yoga, yin yoga, Hatha yoga, and restorative yoga. As yoga-based activities are the heart and soul of this course, daily practice is critical to help students consolidate their new skills as they practice yoga techniques and deepen their practice and understanding throughout the semester. The more students commit to the practices of yoga, the more they will reap the rewards.
