For a major in Philosophy, students must fulfill the requirements in each of the areas below as well as satisfy the general college requirements for the degree of bachelor of arts. Students must take a minimum of 30 credit hours in the major. (Effective for students entering Fall 2020: the minimum is 33 credit hours in the major.)
1. Foundational Requirements:
a. History Sequence: PH 203 - Ancient Greek Philosophy and PH 204 - Modern Philosophy from Descartes to Kant
b. Logic: PH 207 - Introduction to Logic
The Philosophy Department recommends completing the Foundational Requirements early in the major, by the end of Sophomore year if possible. It is also strongly recommended that students complete a 100-level philosophy course before taking other philosophy courses.
2. Electives: six additional philosophy courses of 3 credit hours or more satisfying the following conditions:
a. At most one of the elective courses may be at the 100-level.
b. At least four of the elective courses must be at the 300-level.
c. One of the 300-level electives must focus primarily on the history of philosophy (PH 306 , PH 307 , PH 308 , PH 327 , , or PH 330 when the topic is historical)
3. Senior Coda: PH 375 - Senior Seminar
4. Maturity Requirement: at least 6 credit hours must be taken at the 300-level during the senior year.
