An examination of ways in which Americans have thought about social and economic class from 1776 to the present. Topics include the origin of the United States as a new kind of classless society, the influence of Marx on Americans' thinking about class, debates about social mobility and the causes of poverty, the politics of class-consciousness, and the dynamics of race and class in the twentieth century.
